Taking Care of Ourselves Physically, Emotionally, Spiritually We take care of ourselves because no one is as invested in our own serenity, usefulness, and happiness as we are. We take care of ourselves because our path is individual and someone else on a different path may be stunted and we do not want to follow them, knowing that if we do, we will be stunted. We gain courage by recognizing that fear is normal when we're about to embark on change but that we can feel the fear and do it anyway! We will understand that sometimes we may feel alone and even often lonely but know that though we may walk our path sometimes alone, we are never truly alone; There are others walking this path too.
We understand that agreements in this life can change anytime we need to; Anytime we realize these agreements have quit working or never did. We acknowledge and get that there will be people in this life who disagree with our path and though it may be disappointing or even hurt, we rise anyway.
That was the conclusion. [ Click here to read what comes before it. ]

Mental Health Abuse in the form of Psychiatric Rape does happen. What can we do to counter this when people with mental or emotional problems go to a Doctor for help? They, in effect, put their entire life and well-being into his hands. So that when it turns out to be misplaced, it can turn out like this...
On February 11, 1998, Missouri psychiatrist William Cone was sentenced to 133 years in prison for sexual and deviate sexual assault of two patients. Cone told the women they had been weaned too early and needed to be "re-parented," which required having sex with him. To convince them, he gave them large amounts of psychotropic drugs to which they became addicted.

A good take on why medicating children should never be the *first* answer, if one at all.
I am not saying this because I think big pharmacy is trying to drug our nation [it is], nor am I saying it because I believe the world is medicated and getting messages that that it is always the solution [it is], NOR am I even saying it because I think kids need a chance to be who they are [they do], nor am I saying it because I think a man-made pill is a temporary solution that can cause more problems in the long run [they can]...
No, I am saying this because I value the intrinsic nature and spirit of what we're born with UNLESS it is a personal problem unsolvable by spiritual solutions or mental and/or emotional counseling. This view, however, is not in big pharma's interests is it? So the author was censored from her comment going public. But guess what? She made it worse for them because she published it to her *own* column.
[ So go read it and show WebMD they can't silence her truth ]
From the page...I silently struggled with the indignity of being force fed medication for many years. During most of my formative years I was bombarded by the disastrous assertion that I could never lead a normal life without taking doctor prescribed pharmaceuticals. My parents believed they were doing what was best for me, in a way, but they also seemed to be looking for easy answers to difficult issues.
The more medical and psychiatric labels I acquired over the years, the less examination was needed into any of our lives in general. As though an explanation that's partially rooted in medical science removes the need for things like honest self reflection, or a meaningful understanding of ourselves and the world around us. Which leads me to the conclusion that medicating a child to make them more "normal" is like slapping a band aid over deep puncture wounds of emotional and spiritual neglect.

HSP and Self-Absorption
This thread...I was just browsing and remembering. This thread started in February 2006 and that was so long ago! I am amazed at the evolution of my own life in just that amount of time. I remember doing this diagram, though, like it was yesterday.
February 2006 was still a life-changing time for me where often I was at the whim of emotions overwhelming me. Thank God I am here in March 2008. Anyway. Hope this thread can inspire someone who may be in the middle of negative self-ick. It's okay if you are! :) We have to acknowledge it before we can transcend it I believe. And of course, post to the thread if you're inclined. I just wanted to mosey on down my own personal memory lane.

Sobriety without God Thumbed down due to inaccuracy of the premise that A.A. is a religious program. Patently not true. See here!
A.A., I don't care how many naysayers antagonize against its precepts, is not religious. It doesn't even have to be about being *spiritual.* The *higher power* concept can be the God of your understanding, your highest consciousness - if you have one -, or your sober self. Whatever.
And for the belligerent wet alcoholics who want to remain defiant even in the face of this, then watch this: "You drink in the face of not wanting to" and that tells me you have no problem being owned by a *lower power.* So. Even if an alcoholic prefers Trimpey's approach to A.A., whatever. It's still a higher power...a higher power than your best thinking which causes you to drink against your own will.
I agree with the friend who sent me this. His comment went along the lines of..."These people seem to have an axe to grind. A.A. doesn't have to be religious or spiritual."
I have some agnostic friends in A.A. who have no problem with the principles. But see, the same humility that drove them to seek help, also drove them to seek out people in A.A. who weren't demented and saying stupid things like, "Fake it til you make it." These articles always seem to get the most screwed up stark raving "sober" people they can find in order to prove its point. Which makes it biased as well as inaccurate.
Don't let the hype fool you.
PS. I re-categorized it into mental health since it's not about religion; as much as religion haters would love to hate A.A. because of the hype. Remember. Do your own research if you really want to know. The Big Book is online and free for the reading. Also, I recommend a friends review of this also.
